  16. A.   Who Needs the WinFax PRO 3.0 Maintenance Release
  17. -----------------------------------------------------
  18. The enclosed patch updates WinFax PRO 3.0 to provide the
  19. following:
  20.  
  21. -    Class 1 fax/modems - improved fax transmissions
  22. -    Class 2 fax/modems using the Exar chipset - improved
  23.      reliability when sending faxes
  24. -    Memory management - improved memory handling while viewing,
  25.      printing and recognizing received faxes
  26. -    14,400 bps fax/modems - a Delrina Windows communications
  27.      driver for use with a 16550 based UART chip (WFXCOMM.DRV)
  28. -    Personal Information Managers (PIMs) - an improved interface
  29.      with products such as PackRat and ACT!
  30. -    Sending to groups - correct handling of names and numbers on
  31.      cover pages during group sends
  32. -    Optical Character Recognition (OCR) - improved recognition of
  33.      international characters
  34. -    CAS fax/modems - improved performance and correct handling of
  35.      manual receive and page numbering
  36. -    Prefixes and credit card numbers - these no longer appear
  37.      when using the recipient fax number variable, @X, on cover
  38.      pages and in fax headers.

  41. B.   How to Update WinFax PRO 3.0 Using WFX304.ZIP
  42. --------------------------------------------------
  43. The following description assumes that you have successfully
  44. downloaded the WinFax PRO 3.0 maintenance release patch file
  45. (WFX304.ZIP), and successfully extracted the following files using
  46. the PKUNZIP utility:
  47.  
  48.      README (this document)
  49.      PATCH.EXE (executable program to run the patch)
  50.      WINFAX.RTP (contains file difference information for patching)
  51.      WINFAX.RTD (description of changes and files affected) 
  52.  
  53. Perform the following steps to update WinFax PRO 3.0.
  54.  
  55. 1.   Copy PATCH.EXE and WINFAX.RTP to your Windows directory (for
  56.      example, C:\WINDOWS).
  57.  
  58. 2.   Make sure the WinFax directory (for example, C:\WINFAX) is 
  59.      in your DOS Path statement.
  60.  
  61.      To determine if the WinFax directory is in your path, type 
  62.      PATH at the DOS prompt and then press ENTER.
  63.      
  64.      If the WinFax directory is not in your Path statement, add 
  65.      it before continuing (see your DOS manual for information on 
  66.      using the Path statement). 
  67.  
  68. Notes:    For this patch to install completely, it must update
  69.           files in two locations, your Windows system directory
  70.           (for example, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM) and your WinFax
  71.           directory (for example, C:\WINFAX). The only way this can
  72.           occur is by running it from your Windows directory with
  73.           the WinFax directory in your path.
  74.  
  75.           Because of the way the patch program looks for files, any
  76.           files that did not exist previously are placed in your
  77.           \Windows directory. As a result, you may find files
  78.           WFXCOMM.DRV and WINMEM32.DLL in your \Windows directory
  79.           after you run the patch program. If this occurs, move 
  80.           WFXCOMM.DRV to your \Windows\system directory (for example,
  81.           C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM) and WINMEM32.DLL to your \WinFax
  82.           directory (for example, C:\WINFAX).
  83.  
  84. 3.   Run the patch program from your Windows directory using
  85.      WINFAX.RTP, for example,
  86.  
  87.           C:\WINDOWS>PATCH /V /I WINFAX.RTP
  88.  
  89.      where, /V (/VERBOSE)      displays all messages during patch
  90.                                execution.
  91.  
  92.             /I (IGNOREMISSING) ignores missing files and continues
  93.                                the patch process. This is useful if
  94.                                you get EPT (File not Found) errors
  95.                                during patch execution.
  96.  
  97. 4.   When the program asks you for a password, type in upper case:
  98.  
  99.           WINFAX IN PATH
  100.  
  101.      and press ENTER.
  102.  
  103.      The patch program automatically updates your existing WinFax
  104.      PRO 3.0 installation.
  105.  
  106. 5.   When you have successfully run the patch program, you can restore 
  107.      your original DOS Path statement.
  108.

  110.  
  111. C.   Using WinFax with High Speed (14,400 bps) Fax/Modems
  112. ---------------------------------------------------------
  113. If you are using WinFax with a Class 1 or Class 2 fax/modem that
  114. has 14,400 bps send/receive capabilities, it is possible that you
  115. have a 16550 based UART COM port chip.
  116.  
  117. If your fax/modem does feature the 16550 UART COM port chip,
  118. there are three alternatives for configuring WinFax to run
  119. effectively. The following methods also explain the implications
  120. of each selection.
  121.  
  122.  
  123. 1. Disabling COMxFIFO setting in SYSTEM.INI
  124. -------------------------------------------
  125.  
  126. Disabling the COMxFIFO setting in your SYSTEM.INI file ensures
  127. reliable fax transmissions at 14,400 bps using WinFax. To disable
  128. the 16550 FIFO buffers, add the following line to the [386 Enh]
  129. section of your SYSTEM.INI file:
  130.  
  131.      COMxFIFO=0
  132.  
  133. If your fax/modem does not feature the 16550 UART COM port chip,
  134. disabling COMxFIFO will not affect your fax/modem's operation.
  135.  
  136. However, making this change could affect other high speed 
  137. communications programs using the same COM port. If this will 
  138. affect other programs you are using:
  139.  
  140. 1.   Check your SYSTEM.INI file and ensure that this setting is
  141.      properly enabled. Go to the [386Enh] section of the file, and
  142.      verify this setting:
  143.  
  144.           COMxFIFO=2
  145.  
  146. 2.   Use one of the two methods described next to configure WinFax
  147.      for use with your fax/modem.
  148.  
  149. Note:     For more information on editing Windows Initialization
  150.           files, see WININI.WRI and SYSINI.WRI in Windows 3.1, or
  151.           WININI.TXT and SYSINI.TXT in Windows 3.0. These files are
  152.           found in the Windows directory.
  153.  
  154.  
  155. 2. Limiting WinFax transmission speed to 9600 bps
  156. -------------------------------------------------
  157. Limiting WinFax transmission speed to 9600 bps means that WinFax
  158. cannot transmit at the highest speed available on your fax/modem.
  159. Only WinFax installed for Class 1 is affected; however, all other
  160. communications programs can continue to run at 14,400 bps.
  161.  
  162. To limit the WinFax transmission speed, add the following setting
  163. to the [General] section of the WINFAX.INI file (found in the
  164. WinFax directory, for example, C:\WINFAX):
  165.  
  166.      MaxTxSpeed=9600
  167.  
  168.  
  169. 3. Using the updated Windows communications driver (WFXCOMM.DRV)
  170. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  171. WinFax provides an updated Windows 3.1 communications driver. It
  172. is copied to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, but not enabled. If
  173. enabled, this driver should permit WinFax and all other
  174. communications program using the same COM port to operate at
  175. 14,400 bps.
  176.  
  177. The updated Windows 3.1 communications driver is named
  178.  
  179.      WFXCOMM.DRV
  180.  
  181. To enable this driver, edit your SYSTEM.INI file, and change the
  182. COMM.DRV= line as follows:
  183.  
  184.      comm.drv=WFXCOMM.DRV
  185.  
  186. The driver tests for the presence of a 16550A UART and will not
  187. enable the FIFOs if the UART is not of the correct type.
  188.  
  189. Advanced settings for this driver are also available. The settings
  190. for both transmit and receive FIFO thresholds are adjustable via
  191. SYSTEM.INI entries in the [386Enh] section.
  192.  
  193. To define the number of bytes loaded into the transmit FIFO on
  194. each interrupt, add:
  195.  
  196.      ComxTXSize=y
  197.  
  198. where,    x is the COM port number
  199.           y is a number between 1 and 16
  200.  
  201. For example:   [386Enh]
  202.                Com1TXSize=14
  203.                Com2TXSize=16
  204.  
  205. The default value is 8 bytes, but 16 bytes provides a reduction in
  206. interrupt overhead, with no change in fax transmission
  207. reliability. If you use a transmit FIFO setting of 1, the driver
  208. will not be able to stream at maximum throughput.
  209.  
  210. To define the interrupt threshold for the receive FIFO, add:
  211.  
  212.      ComxRXSize=y
  213.  
  214. where,    x is the COM port number
  215.           y is one of: 1, 4, 8, or 14
  216.  
  217. The default value is 14 bytes, which matches the setting in the
  218. original Windows 3.1 communications driver. Setting the receive
  219. threshold to a lower value increases receive reliability. A
  220. setting of 8 is recommended for most systems. For example:
  221.  
  222.      Com1RXSize=8
  223.  
  224.  
  225. D.   Sending Faxes using a Class 1 Fax/Modem
  226. --------------------------------------------
  227. When sending faxes using a Class 1 fax/modem, one of the following
  228. situations may occur:
  229.  
  230. -    WinFax connects only intermittently or not at all with the
  231.      recipient's fax station
  232.  
  233. -    you cannot send more than one page of a multiple page fax
  234.  
  235. -    transmission fails between pages
  236.  
  237. -    transmitted pages are corrupted, missing parts, or cut off.
  238.  
  239. These situations can occur if the flow control settings in WinFax
  240. and the fax/modem do not coincide, or the fax/modem requires
  241. WinFax to use another setting.
  242.  
  243. To correct these situations, set the flow control in both WinFax
  244. and the fax/modem to hardware flow control. 
  245.  
  246. Note:     Previous versions of WinFax supported software flow
  247.           control only.
  248.  
  249. To set flow control for WinFax, add the HdwFlowControl= line in
  250. the [General] section of the WINFAX.INI file to one of the
  251. following:
  252.  
  253.      HdwFlowControl=0;   for software flow control
  254.      HdwFlowControl=1;   for hardware flow control
  255.  
  256. The initialization string (or init string) sets flow control for
  257. the fax/modem.
  258.  
  259. Note:     Certain fax/modems and init strings work without setting
  260.           flow control. Please contact your fax/modem manufacturer
  261.           for more information.
  262.  
  263. For Class 1 fax/modems supporting hardware flow control (some do
  264. not), change the init string as follows:
  265.  
  266. 1.   Pull down the Fax menu in WinFax, and select Program Setup.
  267.      The WinFax PRO Program Setup dialog appears.
  268.  
  269. 2.   Click on Fax/Modem. The Fax/Modem Setup dialog appears.
  270.  
  271. 3.   Modify the Modem Initialization String as follows.
  272.  
  273.      a)   Make sure the init string begins with:
  274.  
  275.             AT&F&C1&D2
  276.  
  277.      b)   Change any existing flow control commands as follows.
  278.  
  279.             Existing:           Change to:
  280.             &H2&I2              &H3
  281.             &K4                 &K3
  282.             &K4S95=44           &K3
  283.             \\J0\\Q1W0          \\J0\\Q3
  284.  
  285.      c)   End the init string with S7=90\.
  286.  
  287.      For example, an init string changed for hardware flow
  288.      control using a Rockwell-based 14.4 fax/modem is as
  289.      follows.

  291.           Before:   AT&F&C1&D2&K4S95=44S7=90\
  292.           After:    AT&F&C1&D2&K3S7=90\
  293.  
  294. 4.   Click on OK to save the changes.
  295.  
  296. Note:     Certain inexpensive cables for external fax/modems do not
  297.           support hardware flow control, although they do work for 
  298.           software flow control. Cables labelled "RTS/CTS", "25
  299.           conductor" or "high quality" are required when using
  300.           hardware flow control.
